Djemila, Roman archaeological site in Sétif Province, Algeria

Djemila is a Roman archaeological site in Sétif Province that stretches across mountainous terrain at about 900 meters elevation. The grounds preserve intact Roman streets, buildings, and public spaces showing the layout of an ancient city.

The settlement was founded as Cuicul in the first century AD and later grew under Emperor Caracalla with new forums and grand buildings being constructed. This expansion shaped its development as a significant Roman center.

The site's museum displays mosaics depicting trade scenes, farming work, and everyday life from the Roman period. These artworks reveal how people lived in the ancient settlement.

A vehicle is necessary to reach this location from major Algerian cities since it sits in a mountainous area. Local guides are available at the entrance to explain the archaeological remains.

The theater was built outside the city walls, an unusual arrangement that came about because Roman architecture had to be adapted to the mountainous landscape. This solution shows how the Romans adjusted their city design to the terrain.
