Djemila, Roman archaeological site in Sétif Province, Algeria
The ancient city of Djemila extends across a mountainous terrain at 900 meters elevation, featuring intact Roman streets, buildings, and public spaces.
Founded as Cuicul in the first century AD, the settlement expanded during Emperor Caracalla's reign with the construction of new forums and grand buildings.
The site museum displays numerous recovered mosaics that detail scenes of commerce, agriculture, and daily activities from the Roman period.
Reaching Djemila requires a vehicle journey from major Algerian cities, with local guides available at the entrance to explain the archaeological remains.
The adaptation of standard Roman architecture to the mountain landscape created an unusual city layout with the theater positioned outside the city walls.
