Ain El Ahnech

Ain El Ahnech is an archaeological site and lake in Guelta Zerka containing prehistoric remains and artifacts. The location holds fossilized bones of elephants, equids, and bovids mixed with stone tools that early inhabitants left behind.

A French paleoanthropologist discovered this location in 1947 while studying ancient deposits in the Setif region. The finds show that early humans and large animals lived in this area across a long span of time.

The stone tools found at this location demonstrate early human manufacturing techniques similar to those identified at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania.

The location lies about 7 kilometers northwest of El Eulma city and requires a guided visit. Visitors need to arrange access through the Algerian antiquities department before coming to the site.

The materials come from a period around 2.4 million years ago and show signs of interactions between early humans and carnivores. This evidence is rare because it documents both species at the same location.
