Ain Boucherit

Ain Boucherit is an archaeological excavation site near El Eulma with two distinct layers containing stone tools and fossil remains. The layers show successive phases of early human occupation and reveal evidence of the living conditions during this period.

This site was dated to 2.4 million years ago, making it the oldest known Paleolithic site in North Africa. Researchers combined geological and paleomagnetic analysis with animal bone discoveries to determine its precise age.

The excavated tools here show advanced stone-working techniques with chopping and cutting implements fashioned from local limestone and flint. These finds offer insight into the practical skills of early people in North Africa.

The site features open excavation areas where the layered deposits are clearly visible. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven ground.

Remains of elephants, horses, rhinos, hippos, antelopes, and crocodiles were found here, showing a diverse animal community. These fossils come from the same time period as the early tools and reveal how abundant the landscape once was.
