Khenchela, Administrative center in Aures Mountains, Algeria

Khenchela is a city nestled in the Aures Mountains at about 1,128 meters (3,700 feet) elevation in northeastern Algeria. The urban area sits within agricultural lands surrounded by mountain terrain and natural landscape features characteristic of the region.

The settlement was once called Mascula and gained importance during the 7th century when Queen Kahina built a fortress there to resist Islamic expansion. This stronghold became a center of defense against the advancing forces of that era.

The Chaouia Berber people have shaped this place, with their traditions visible in daily life and local crafts that continue through generations. Visitors can observe this heritage in the markets and in how residents blend traditional practices with contemporary living.

The city can be visited year-round, though warmer months offer more comfortable conditions for exploration. Key institutions like Abbes Laghrour University are distributed throughout the area, which helps identify different neighborhoods while walking around.

A mass grave site near the area holds remains from the period of independence struggle and conflict. This discovery serves as a quiet reminder of events that shaped the region's recent past.
