Õismäe, Residential subdistrict in Haabersti, Estonia
Õismäe is a residential subdistrict in Haabersti featuring a distinctive circular layout with apartment buildings arranged concentrically around a central artificial lake. Schools, kindergartens, and parks fill the spaces between the housing blocks, creating a planned residential environment.
The area originated as a farmstead with roots back to the 17th century, evolving through agricultural use until the 19th century when it became a manor property. The circular residential development we see today was designed and built starting in the 1960s as a modern urban planning project.
Educational excellence in the district gained recognition when Jeanna Shultz from the Russian Gymnasium received the Teacher of the Year award in 2006.
The subdistrict is walkable and well-served by public buses connecting to other parts of Tallinn. The central lake and surrounding pathways serve as natural landmarks to help you navigate the residential area easily.
The circular arrangement of buildings was an unusual choice for post-war Tallinn and reflected modern urban design principles favored in the Soviet Union. This radial pattern makes the district distinctly recognizable from above and sets it apart from other neighborhoods in the city.
