Kadriorg Palace, Baroque palace in Kadriorg, Estonia
Kadriorg Palace is a baroque residence in the Kadriorg district of Tallinn and now functions as an art museum displaying works from several centuries. The three-story building features symmetrical wings and extensive stone carvings on its facade, along with elaborate stucco ornaments throughout the interior rooms.
Russian Tsar Peter I ordered construction to begin in 1718 as a summer residence and named it after his wife Catherine I. Building work continued into the 1720s under the direction of Italian architects.
The Kadriorg Art Museum within the palace exhibits an extensive collection of Western European and Russian art from the 16th through 20th centuries.
The palace opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM and stays accessible until 8 PM on select days. Rooms are spread across several floors, so visitors should plan time for walking through the different levels.
The main hall ceiling displays the initials of Catherine I, crafted by master artisan Heinrich von Bergen during the 1720s. These details are embedded within rich stuccowork and become apparent only upon close inspection.
