House of the Blackheads

House of the Blackheads, Renaissance guildhouse in Vanalinn, Estonia

The House of the Blackheads is a Renaissance guild building in Tallinn's Old Town consisting of three connected structures with white halls and Gothic architectural features. The layout reflects different building periods, with elements spanning multiple centuries integrated into a single complex.

The Brotherhood of Black Heads acquired this building in 1517 and underwent major renovations by architect Arent Passer in 1597. This transformation established it as a key gathering place for the city's merchant elite over the following centuries.

The painted doors feature Saint Maurice, the patron of the merchant brotherhood, displayed in carved wood and stone details. This religious imagery held deep meaning for the members who gathered here for their professional and ceremonial activities.

The building is open during daytime hours and allows visitors to explore the interior at their own pace. It is worth spending time to discover the different rooms and architectural details across the connected sections of the complex.

Members of the Brotherhood helped shape the city's Christmas customs since the 15th century by placing decorated spruce trees in the market square. This practice was among the earliest documented examples of modern holiday traditions in Northern Europe.
