Great Guild Hall, Gothic gildhouse in Vanalinn, Estonia.
The Great Guild Hall is a Gothic merchant house built from limestone in Tallinn's Old Town, with characteristic blind arches on its facade. Inside, a spacious main hall features carved pillar capitals throughout the room.
The building was commissioned in 1407 by a merchant guild and served as their headquarters until 1920. Afterward it was repurposed as a museum building.
The name reflects the powerful merchant guild that controlled this place for centuries. The building still shows how important traders were in the medieval city.
The location is easy to find since it sits right in the Old Town and is clearly visible from the street. Plan time to explore the interior spaces, especially the main hall and lower levels.
The cellar beneath the hall operated as a wine bar called Das Suesse Loch during the 1800s and 1900s and was a gathering place. This hidden history reveals life below the official guild rooms.
