Merneptah Stele, Ancient Egyptian artifact in Cairo Museum
The Merneptah Stele, also known as the Israel Stele or Victory Stele of Merneptah, is an inscription by the Ancient Egyptian king Merneptah.
Discovered by Flinders Petrie in 1896 at Thebes, it's dated to the late 13th century BC.
It is the earliest textual reference to Israel and the only reference from ancient Egypt.
It is currently housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The last three of its 28 lines refer to Canaan and constitute the earliest textually-based mention of Israel.
