Precinct of Mut, Ancient Egyptian temple compound in Karnak, Egypt
The Precinct of Mut spans 90,000 square meters and contains six temples including the main Mut Temple and Contra Temple within the Karnak complex.
The mud brick enclosure wall dates to the 30th Dynasty, while Temple A features stelae documenting Ramesses II's construction work and marriage to a Hittite princess.
The temple compound housed 570 statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet, commissioned during the reign of Amenhotep III for religious ceremonies.
Recent excavations by Johns Hopkins University teams have uncovered numerous artifacts, including female figurines related to health and childbearing rituals.
A sacred lake called Isheru encircles the Mut Temple, making it the only Egyptian temple with a crescent-shaped water body surrounding its structure.
