Al-Sayeda Nafeesah Mosque

Al-Sayeda Nafeesah Mosque, Islamic mausoleum and mosque in Islamic Cairo, Egypt

Al-Sayeda Nafeesah is a mosque and mausoleum in Cairo featuring a prominent golden shrine and decorated interior spaces. The building combines prayer areas with a burial chamber, providing separate sections for men and women visitors.

The site originates from the 9th century but underwent major reshaping during the Fatimid period. This medieval renovation in the 12th century created much of the structure visitors see today.

The mosque draws people seeking spiritual connection and prayer, with visible daily worship practices throughout the day. You'll notice how visitors remove their shoes at the entrance and move respectfully through the prayer halls.

Visits are possible daily, with standard operating hours and shoe removal required at entry. Modest dress is necessary as this is an active place of worship, and separate entrances and prayer areas serve different visitors.

The interior was recently fully restored and renewed with contemporary decorative details by a South Asian community. This renovation shows how historical sites continue to be maintained by people from different parts of the world.
