Giza Zoo, Zoological garden in Giza, Egypt
Giza Zoo is a zoological garden on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt, home to thousands of animals from Africa and beyond. The grounds feature water channels, wooden bridges, and bird ponds that create a park-like setting.
The site opened in 1891 with plants and flowers brought from outside Egypt. It later grew into the first zoological garden on the African continent.
The on-site museum displays preserved specimens of regional wildlife, offering insight into African fauna. Visitors can examine rare species that inhabit or once inhabited the area.
The park opens daily and offers separate admission for Egyptian nationals and international guests. Visiting in the morning is recommended when animals are more active and temperatures remain comfortable.
A small pavilion from the opening years still stands within the grounds, showing late 19th-century architecture. Some of the original trees planted at the founding remain on site.
