Belmont Building, Modernist skyscraper in Garden City, Cairo, Egypt
Belmont Building is a modernist skyscraper in Garden City with 31 floors reaching 106 meters high. The structure combines residential and commercial spaces throughout its height, positioned directly along the Nile River with views across the water.
The structure was built in 1958 and originally named Sabet Sabet Building after its owner. The name changed to Belmont when a cigarette advertisement on the rooftop became so visible it shaped how people identified the building.
The building shows how Cairo began to grow upward in the 1950s, bringing modern residential styles to the city. The mix of apartments and shops throughout its floors reflects how people here lived and worked together.
The building sits on Corniche du Nil Street in an accessible location near major routes. You can appreciate the exterior and its riverside position from the street, though interior access may be restricted to residents and authorized visitors.
Architect Naoum Shebib led the entire project from start to finish, serving simultaneously as structural engineer and building contractor. This unusual combination of roles allowed him to control every aspect of the structure according to his vision.
