Gezira Center for Modern Art, Modern art museum in Zamalek district, Cairo, Egypt.

Gezira Center for Modern Art is a museum on Gezira Island in Zamalek district that holds Egyptian artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection features paintings and sculptures displayed in both permanent galleries and rotating exhibitions.

The collection started in 1925 when Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil purchased artworks from an exhibition, laying the foundation for the museum. The building was later designed in the 1930s by a local architect to properly house the growing art collection.

The center displays works by Egyptian artists whose creations shaped the nation's art movement. Walking through, you see how Egyptian artistic expression evolved and what subjects mattered most to the artists across generations.

The museum sits on Gezira Island near Cairo Opera House and is easy to locate. Allow enough time for your visit, as the collection is substantial and the gallery spaces have much to explore.

The building went through a lengthy preparation process before opening to properly arrange the spaces. This careful planning is evident in how thoughtfully the collection is organized and displayed.

Architecture in Cairo: Mamluk mosques, Ottoman houses, and historic cemeteries

Cairo preserves an architectural heritage spanning over fifteen centuries. This collection includes religious buildings, traditional houses, and utilitarian structures that reflect the Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods. Mosques such as Sultan Hassan with its 68-meter minaret stand alongside ancient homes with mashrabiya windows, while the 9th-century Nilometer highlights the river's importance in Egyptian society. The route passes through various historic districts, from El Khalifa with its medieval monuments to Ottoman houses from the 16th and 17th centuries like Bayt Al-Suhaymi or those housing the Gayer-Anderson Museum. Aqsunqur Mosque stands out with its Iznik tiles showcasing floral motifs, a legacy of Ottoman influence. The City of the Dead, a cemetery stretching four kilometers, illustrates the continuity between burial sites and inhabited areas. Green spaces like Al-Azhar Park offer views of a dense city where traditions blend with everyday life.
