Cairo Opera House, Performing arts center in Giza Governorate, Egypt
The Cairo Opera House is a performing arts center in Giza Governorate consisting of several halls and an open-air theater. The main hall seats over a thousand spectators, while a smaller hall is designed for chamber music and intimate performances.
The Japanese government funded construction of this opera house after the old Khedivial Opera House burned down in 1971. The opening took place in 1988 and symbolized cultural cooperation between Japan and Egypt.
The complex hosts the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and Cairo Opera Company, which regularly present classical concerts and opera performances. Visitors can also explore the music library, art gallery and museum within the building, all part of the cultural offering.
Visitors should check the program in advance, as the different halls often present simultaneous events of varying types. The outdoor areas provide an additional option for open-air performances in good weather.
The inauguration of the house brought the first Kabuki performance on African soil. This Japanese theater form was specially adapted for the Egyptian audience and showed the artistic connection between both nations.
