Kasr El Dobara Evangelical Church, Protestant church in downtown Cairo, Egypt
Kasr El Dobara Evangelical Church is a Protestant church building made of pale stone, standing close to Tahrir Square in central Cairo. The building contains several gathering halls on different floors and is large enough to be clearly visible from the street.
King Farouk approved the project in 1944, and construction started in 1947 on the site of a former palace. The church was built to give the growing Protestant community in central Cairo a permanent place to gather.
Kasr El Dobara Evangelical Church is one of the few churches in central Cairo that holds regular services in both Arabic and English. Sunday gatherings draw worshippers from Egypt and from many other countries, giving the space a noticeably international feel.
The church sits within walking distance of Tahrir Square, making it easy to reach on foot from many parts of central Cairo. It is worth checking service times in advance, as they can change depending on the season.
Inside the building, a prayer room stays open around the clock, even in the middle of the night. This is unusual for a church in a city as busy as Cairo, and many visitors are surprised to discover it.
