Fuerte de Marlborough, 18th century military fort in Cala de Sant Esteve, Spain

Fuerte de Marlborough is a coastal defense structure at Menorca's harbor entrance with subterranean passages, deep moats, and stone-carved chambers built into the cliffs. The complex spreads across multiple levels that reveal how the defensive layout was organized.

The fort was built in 1710 during British rule to protect Menorca's harbor. It played a role in conflicts between the British, French, and Spanish over Mediterranean control.

The fortress reflects military construction methods of the 1700s and shows how the British designed their defenses on Menorca. You can see in the stonework and passages how their style differed from earlier Spanish fortifications.

The fort can be explored through its various levels, with audiovisual displays guiding visitors through the underground installations. Wear comfortable shoes, as there are narrow passages and stairs to navigate.

The fortress has a watchtower reached by a stone path that prevented enemies from establishing strongholds in the surrounding area. This separate position was a clever tactical move to strengthen the defenses.
