Botanical Garden of Lourizán, Arboretum and botanical garden in Lourizán, Pontevedra, Spain.
The Botanical Garden of Lourizán is an arboretum spanning several hectares with more than 800 plant species from Galicia and around the world. The collection spreads across open areas, pathways, and sections of older trees that give shape to the grounds.
The garden was founded in 1949 and grew into a research center for plant science. Over the decades, the collection expanded with rare specimens and became part of conservation programs.
The site contains a 19th-century chapel and converted dovecote that reflect the rural past of this corner of Galicia. These structures sit naturally within the landscape and speak to how farming shaped life here.
Visits require advance reservation and typically take 2 to 3 hours with a guided tour. Wear comfortable walking shoes since you'll move along paths and slightly uneven terrain.
The collection holds around 230 different camellia varieties, one of the largest such collections in northern Spain. This rare specialization makes the place especially worth visiting for plant enthusiasts.
