Reservoir of Puente Alta, reservoir in Segovia Province
The Puente Alta reservoir is a water basin in Segovia Province held back by a dam built in 1953 and covering about 21 hectares with the capacity to store roughly 10 million cubic meters of water. The landscape consists of pine and oak forests surrounding the calm water surface, with hillsides and open terrain that frame the area.
Construction of the dam began in 1945 to expand water supply to Segovia but faced budget increases by 1950 that required central government support to complete the project. Its completion in 1953 became a turning point for water management in the region.
The reservoir sits within the Guadarrama mountain range and represents how water resources shape daily life in the Segovia region. Visitors can observe the local connection to this landscape through walking paths and the surrounding pine and oak forests that frame the water.
Access is by the Vereda del Sobrunal path, starting about a kilometer from Revenga and continuing with walking trails around the basin. Swimming is not recommended despite the calm appearance of the water, as it can pose hazards.
During autumn, when rainfall is adequate and temperatures remain mild, numerous mushroom varieties grow in the damp forests surrounding the basin. This natural diversity attracts foragers who appreciate both the ecosystem and the seasonal transformations of the place.
