Iglesia de San Bartolomé
Iglesia de San Bartolomé, Baroque church building in central Murcia, Spain.
The Iglesia de San Bartolomé is a Baroque church located in central Murcia featuring a Latin cross plan and a single main nave. The structure includes a barrel-vaulted ceiling and two side transepts that end in semicircular apses.
Construction of the current structure began in 1767 and continued with interruptions over several decades before completion in the 1880s under architect Justo Millán. The extended building period reflects the financial and logistical challenges of large religious projects during this era.
The church displays Baroque artworks from the Murcia region, including sculptures by Francisco Salzillo that reflect the religious artistic vision of its era. These pieces show how local craftspeople expressed faith through their work.
Access outside of services is limited and depends on seasonal opening hours that vary throughout the year. It is best to check the schedule before planning your visit to avoid disappointment.
The building connects directly to a palace-house of local marquises who provided substantial financial support for its completion. This architectural link reveals how noble families were intimately involved in sponsoring major religious construction.
