Church of San Juan de Dios, Murcia, Baroque church in central Murcia, Spain
The Church of San Juan de Dios is a baroque structure with an unusual oval floor plan and ornate rococo plasterwork throughout. Italian artist Paolo Sístori created the altarpieces that adorn the interior.
The church was constructed between 1764 and 1782, replacing the former Alcázar Mayor that previously occupied the site. Excavations beneath the building have revealed remains of a 12th-century fortified structure.
The church displays religious sculptures spanning five centuries in their original setting, showing the work of local artists like sculptor Juan González Moreno. Visitors can see how these pieces relate to the space they occupy and understand the artistic traditions of the region.
The church is located near Murcia Cathedral at Calle Eulogio Soriano 4 and offers wheelchair access for visitors. You can visit during regular opening hours for both worship services and to see the museum collection.
The church features a transverse altar arrangement along the minor axis, a design choice rarely seen in Spanish religious architecture. This unusual layout creates a different sense of space when entering compared to traditional church orientations.
