Puente Nuevo

Puente Nuevo is a footbridge over the Segura River with a main span of approximately 47 meters and several smaller spans. The structure is made of visible steel and provides a practical pathway for pedestrians between neighborhoods.

It was originally built in 1903 as the second bridge in Murcia to serve the city. Over the decades it was adapted into a pedestrian crossing and underwent maintenance work to keep pace with changes to the river and cityscape.

The bridge displays characteristic steel construction from the industrial period of the early 20th century, and you can observe the detailed metalwork as you cross. Today it serves as a key way for local residents and visitors to connect across the riverbank.

Access is straightforward and the bridge is open to pedestrians with a paved surface wide enough for foot traffic. Keep in mind that the structure was altered during river channeling work in the 1960s and today only the core elements of the original construction remain visible.

The bridge's parabolic metal structure has remained in its basic form even though significant portions were removed during the river channeling work. This makes it a hidden example of adaptive architecture that adjusted to the needs of a changing city.
