Monumento al Sagrado Corazón, Religious tower monument in San Juan de Aznalfarache, Spain.
The Monumento al Sagrado Corazón is a religious tower in San Juan de Aznalfarache, a town on the west bank of the Guadalquivir river facing Seville. The tower rises from a trapezoidal base through several stacked sections and is topped by a large statue of Christ, with a chapel built into the lower part of the structure.
Work on the monument began in 1939, shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, when a dedicated board was set up to oversee the project. Construction stretched over more than a decade, and the chapel was formally opened in November 1955.
The statue shows Christ with one hand raised in blessing and the other pointing to the heart, a gesture that many Catholic visitors immediately recognize. The monument draws people from the surrounding area who come to pray or simply stand before it in silence.
The monument can be seen from several points in the surrounding area, including from the Seville side of the river, where it appears on the skyline. The chapel inside is open for individual visits, and the space around the base is easy to walk around.
The statue was made from a concrete mix containing marble and white cement, then finished with sandstone, which gives it an unusually pale look that stands out against the sky. On sunny days, the surface catches the light in a way that makes the figure visible from a considerable distance across the river.
