Aguilar Reservoir, embalse en la provincia de Palencia, España
Aguilar Reservoir is a large body of water in Palencia Province, formed by damming the Pisuerga River near the town of Aguilar de Campoo. It supplies drinking water and supports irrigation for surrounding farmland, while also generating electricity through its dam.
The dam was completed in 1963, flooding a valley that had been farmed and inhabited for centuries. Several villages disappeared under the water when the reservoir filled for the first time.
The shores are used by people from nearby villages for fishing, walking, and spending time outdoors, which gives the place a relaxed, everyday feel. On warm weekends, families gather at the sandy beaches, and the water is busy with kayaks and small sailing boats.
Paths along the shore make it easy to walk or cycle around parts of the reservoir without any special equipment. In summer the sandy beaches can get busy, so arriving early in the day is a good idea if you want more space.
When water levels drop low enough, the stone arch of a medieval bridge and a church tower from one of the flooded villages become visible above the surface. These moments draw people to the water's edge to see what remains of the settlements that once stood in the valley.
