The monastery features a three-nave church with cross vaults, pointed arches, and a heptagonal presbytery flanked by robust radial buttresses.
Founded in the 9th century, the monastery gained prominence in 1169 when King Alfonso VIII transferred it to the Premonstratensian Order.
The cloister displays detailed Romanesque capitals depicting biblical scenes, although several original pieces are now in Madrid's National Archaeological Museum.
The monastery serves as a secondary school, UNED center, and houses the ROM Museum, which exhibits models and replicas of medieval architectural elements.
The monastery underwent restoration through Spain's first craft school workshop in 1985, establishing a precedent for heritage conservation programs.
