Castle of Aguilar de Campoo stands on a rocky hilltop at about 970 meters elevation and has a trapezoidal shape with surviving exterior walls and towers. From this position the occupants could watch over the valley and routes below.
The fortress was first recorded in documents in 1039. It underwent several reconstructions during the 12th and 14th centuries to strengthen its defenses.
Coats of arms near the eastern entrance show the families who ruled from this place. The pointed arches in the walls reflect medieval Spanish building traditions.

Cardinal Pedro Gómez Barroso was held prisoner here in 1353 on orders from King Pedro the Cruel. His offense was criticizing the detention of a royal family member.
