Palau Maricel, Noucentist palace on the Mediterranean coast in Sitges, Spain
Palau Maricel is a palace in Catalan architectural style located on the Mediterranean coast near Sitges. The building features extensive terraces, a vaulted cloister with rounded arches, and multiple rooms that overlook the sea.
An American art collector commissioned a Catalan architect to design and construct this palace in the early years of the 20th century. The project took roughly a decade and reflected the architectural trends of that era in the region.
The palace name reflects the whimsy of early 20th-century Catalan design, when such estates became gathering places for artistic pursuits. Its rooms display craftsmanship and decorative choices that visitors can observe firsthand throughout their walk.
The property sits directly along the waterfront and is best reached on foot from central Sitges. Exploring the various rooms and outdoor areas requires a good amount of time for a thorough visit.
The entrance door dates to the 15th century and was originally used in Salamanca before being transported to this location. Inside, handcrafted capitals display the artistry of sculptors who contributed to the palace's decoration.
