Sitges, Coastal resort town in Garraf region, Catalonia
Sitges is a coastal municipality in the Garraf comarca of Catalonia, stretching along four kilometers of Mediterranean shoreline southwest of Barcelona. The townscape combines narrow streets lined with white houses, palm-lined promenades, and seventeen sandy beaches interrupted by rocky outcrops and small coves.
Merchants from the area traveled to Cuba during the 18th century to trade with the Spanish colonies, returning with fortunes they invested in building grand houses. The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century transformed the settlement from a fishing port into a popular seaside resort for artists and wealthy families from Barcelona.
The Maricel Museum, Cau Ferrat Museum, and Romantic Museum preserve collections of art spanning from Romanesque to Modern periods, including works by El Greco.
The beaches lie within walking distance from the historic center, with some accessed by wooden walkways. Most public areas open from spring through autumn, while the inner town routes can be explored on foot year-round.
The annual film festival in October brings together directors and fans interested in fantasy and horror productions. A smaller event in February celebrates the local carnival tradition with parades featuring elaborate costumes and music filling the streets.
