The Santuario de la Virgen de la Asunción del Viso is a sanctuary positioned at 683 meters elevation within the Cantabrian Mountains. From this location, visitors can see across the mountainous landscape and toward the sea in the distance.
The first documented record of worship at this site appears in a Brotherhood Book from 1604. The sanctuary underwent complete reconstruction in 1614 and again after a fire in 1945, reopening with a new structure by 1954.
This sanctuary has drawn pilgrims and local communities for hundreds of years as a place of devotion and gathering. People come together especially on feast days to participate in masses and processions that shape the spiritual life of the surrounding region.
Access is available by foot via a marked hiking path that departs from the village of Salas. The walk involves climbing through the landscape, so good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are advisable.
The current building was funded by local devotees who contributed after the fire damaged the previous structure. A skilled sculptor created the statue of the Virgin inside, making it a notable example of mid-century religious craftsmanship.
