S'Enclusa, Mountain summit in Ferreries, Spain
S'Enclusa is a mountain summit in Ferreries that rises 275 meters above sea level. From the peak, you can see across the island and out over the Mediterranean Sea.
An American military base occupied the summit from 1965 to 1993 for communication purposes. The installation was abandoned as Cold War tensions eased.
Local residents call this peak Dalt Sa Torre, a name that comes from the 18th-century watchtower that once guarded the summit. The tower's purpose was to keep watch over ship traffic in the Mediterranean.
The walk up from Ferreries takes about an hour on a marked trail. The ground is rocky and loose, so bring proper hiking shoes and plenty of water.
Remnants of the former military base still sit on the summit, including a distinctive green spherical water tank. These structures tell the story of Cold War strategies in the Mediterranean.
