Torre de Cap Andritxol, Watchtower in Andratx and Calvià, Spain
Torre de Cap Andritxol is a cylindrical watchtower positioned on a hillside between Camp de Mar and Cala Fornells at 180 meters above sea level. The structure contains a main chamber with a vault and multiple rooms that once served defensive purposes along this section of coast.
This tower was built in 1582 as part of Mallorca's coastal defense system against maritime threats. Watchmen stationed here used smoke signals to communicate with other towers across the island and warn of approaching ships or danger.
The structure received recognition as a Heritage of Cultural Interest, representing the military architectural traditions of 16th-century Spanish coastal settlements.
A marked hiking path from the main road leads to this structure across open terrain and coastal landscape. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended since the trail crosses uneven ground and offers rewarding views of the sea and surrounding countryside.
Two separate barracks buildings from different periods stand near the main tower: one housed the watchmen while the other served as a stable for horses. These structures reveal how the site was occupied and maintained over several centuries.
