Andratx, municipality of Spain
Andratx is a municipality in the western part of Mallorca, made up of a hilltop village center and a separate harbor district called Port d'Andratx on the coast. Between these two poles, the land shifts from older stone houses and orchards to newer residential areas built on the lower slopes.
The area was settled during the Moorish period, and the present name dates from that era. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the settlement grew as a fishing village and later became a small trading center.
The name Andratx comes from an Arabic word for a fortified settlement, a reminder of the Moorish period on the island. In the old village center, narrow lanes and houses built from dark stone still follow the layout of that earlier time.
The village center and Port d'Andratx sit a few miles (about 4 km) apart, so having a car or catching a local bus is useful if you want to move between the two. Parking is easier near the harbor, while the old village streets are narrower and can be harder to navigate by car.
Port d'Andratx is known as one of the most expensive places to moor a yacht in the whole Mediterranean, yet the old village a few miles inland remains relatively quiet. The harbor was also historically a base for tuna fishing long before tourism reshaped the local economy.
