Iglesia Panteón de los Marqueses de Moya, Gothic church in Carboneras de Guadazaón, Spain.
Iglesia Panteón de los Marqueses de Moya is an early modern church in a small town with a layout of single nave, flat apse, and Gothic ribbed vaults dating from the early 16th century. The building functions as a burial church and preserves the distinctive quality that parts of the original structure were later reworked with 18th-century stucco detailing.
The church was founded around 1500 by Andrés Cabrera and Beatriz de Bobadilla, the Marqueses de Moya, and was originally part of a Dominican convent named Santa Cruz. In the 18th century, architect Martín de Aldehuela was commissioned to rework portions of the interior with stucco detailing.
The building displays Isabelline Gothic features with ornately carved stone and decorated portals that reflect Renaissance craftsmanship. These architectural details shape the interior spaces and allow visitors to experience the artistic refinement of the early modern period directly.
The building is not always open to the public and requires advance contact with the municipal office to arrange a visit. Planning ahead is recommended since viewings happen by appointment only.
The interior preserves traces of the original Renaissance wooden ceiling and pillars hidden beneath the 18th-century stucco layers. These concealed layers tell the story of multiple phases of artistic reworking that the building underwent.
