Cuba, monument in Madrid, Spain

The Cuba monument is a large sculpture combining a fountain with bronze and marble figures located in the Retiro Park. The composition features a central female figure representing the island, accompanied by historical figures such as Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabella I, with decorative animal sculptures and tropical fruits surrounding the structure.

The monument was conceived in 1929 as Cuba's gesture of gratitude to Madrid and officially opened on October 27, 1952, after significant political delays. The opening date coincided with the 460th anniversary of Columbus discovering Cuba, marking the historical connection between Spain and the island.

The monument displays symbols from Cuba's history and culture through its figures and decorative elements. The central female figure with her distinctive attire represents the island itself, while bronze sculptures of iguanas and turtles reflect the local wildlife that visitors can see throughout the composition.

The monument sits in an open plaza within the Retiro Park, making it easily accessible and inviting to linger. The fountain flowing around the sculpture creates a pleasant spot to rest, especially on warm days.

Originally a bust of the Cuban president Gerardo Machado was planned for the monument, but political changes meant it was never added to the final composition. Instead, only the allegorical female figure remains as the central element of the memorial.
