Tajogaite volcano, Recent volcano in Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, Spain.
Tajogaite is a volcano in the Cumbre Vieja range on La Palma that stands 1122 meters above sea level. The main crater measures 172 by 106 meters and is surrounded by six other vents.
The eruption began in September 2021 and continued for 85 days until December that year. This activity was the longest documented eruption in La Palma's recorded past.
The name comes from the Benahoarita language spoken by the island's first inhabitants and means split mountain. This refers to the way the ground opened during the eruption.
Visitors can reach the site through guided walks starting at Llano de Los Jables at 1200 meters elevation. The circular trail covers roughly 5 kilometers and requires sturdy footwear and plenty of water.
The lava flows extended the island's coastline and formed 47 hectares of new land when they reached the sea. This land formation changed the shape of the island permanently and created fresh rock formations along the western shore.
