Hervanta water tower

Hervanta water tower is a cylindrical structure rising to about 48 metres and defines the Tampere district's skyline. The building holds approximately 1,000 cubic metres of water to supply the area and features an observation platform with views across the city.

The tower was built in 1983 during a period of rapid expansion when Hervanta developed into a major residential area for Tampere. This era saw major infrastructure improvements across the young district as the city grew outward.

The tower serves as a visual anchor for the Hervanta neighbourhood and helps residents orient themselves within the expanding district. Its distinctive shape has become part of how locals perceive and identify their area.

Access to the observation platform is available, though it is best to check opening times in advance as the tower has restricted hours. The platform is reached by climbing stairs, so some physical fitness is helpful.

The UFO-like design was an unusual architectural choice when completed and shows a modern approach to a practical structure that serves water distribution. This distinctive appearance still makes it memorable against the surrounding landscape today.
