Ploemeur extends across 139 square kilometers of land between the Atlantic Ocean and agricultural territories in northwestern Brittany region.
The settlement originated from the old Breton name 'Plo Meur', meaning Big Parish, and developed from a fishing village into an administrative center.
The municipality initiated a linguistic plan in 2006 to promote the Breton language through public signage and educational programs.
