Ivry-sur-Seine is a commune in the Val-de-Marne department located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) southeast of central Paris. The area includes residential neighborhoods, former industrial sites, and various public facilities spread across roughly 6 square kilometers (2.3 square miles).
In medieval times, the territory belonged to Notre-Dame-de-Paris before a large castle was built here in the 17th century. During the French Revolution, the building suffered heavy damage and was later mostly torn down.
The area has been home to one of France's largest Vietnamese communities since the mid-1970s, when many families settled here after the war ended. Along certain streets, Asian shops and restaurants reflect the daily life of residents and offer visitors a look into this active community.
The area is easily reached by Paris Metro Line 7, which has two stations here, and by RER line C, which serves one stop. Visitors can also find the headquarters of major retail chains in the vicinity, which serve as helpful landmarks.
The Manufacture des Œillets, a former metalworking factory from 1890, once covered a site of about 86,000 square meters (925,000 square feet). At its peak, around 600 workers were employed there, mainly producing nails and metal goods.
