Paris sewers, Underground sewer network in Paris, France
The Paris sewer network extends over 2,400 kilometers beneath the streets, managing wastewater and rainwater through a complex system of tunnels and pipes.
In 1370, the first underground sewer was constructed under Rue Montmartre, marking the beginning of Paris organized waste management system.
The Paris Sewer Museum presents exhibitions about water management, environmental protection, and the technical evolution of urban sanitation through centuries.
Located at Pont de l'Alma, the museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with guided tours explaining the functioning of this underground infrastructure.
The network carries over 300 million cubic meters of water annually while housing 140,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables for internet connectivity.
