Orange - Remparts romains, Roman walls in Orange, France
The Roman walls are sections of ancient fortifications located near the municipal cemetery, built from stone in the traditional Roman construction style. The remaining portions display the solid masonry techniques and defensive design typical of the imperial period.
These fortifications were built during the Roman imperial period to protect and control Orange. Archaeological work in the 1930s uncovered significant wall sections and revealed details about their original construction methods.
These walls were part of the city's defense system and show how Romans fortified this important settlement. Walking near them today gives you a sense of how Orange once functioned as a protected trading hub in the region.
The wall sections are located along Rue Saint-Clément and are generally visible from outside, with some areas accessible during specific times. It helps to check ahead which sections are open, since not all parts of the fortifications are always accessible at once.
Much of the original wall route remains unclear due to later modifications and urban development over the centuries. Researchers have attempted to map out the complete circuit, but many sections lie buried beneath modern buildings or have vanished entirely.
