Musée du Bagage, Museum in Haguenau, France
The musée du Bagage is a museum in Haguenau, in northeastern France, dedicated to the history of travel luggage and home to a collection of over 450 old trunks, bags, and travel accessories. The objects span several centuries, ranging from simple wooden boxes to leather trunks with ornate locks and decorative fittings.
The museum opened in June 2011, driven by a private collector who wanted to share a restored collection with the public. In 2016, it moved to the former premises of the Banque de France on Rue Saint-Georges, a building that offered more room for the objects.
Walking through the collection, visitors see how luggage reflects the habits and social status of travelers from past centuries. A heavy wooden trunk speaks of a very different journey than a light fabric bag, and that contrast is visible throughout the rooms.
The museum is open only on weekends, so planning ahead is a good idea before making the trip. It sits on Rue Saint-Georges, an easy walk from the center of Haguenau, and can be combined with a visit to other nearby museums in town.
Despite welcoming tens of thousands of visitors over the years, the museum remained largely unknown even in nearby Strasbourg, where many people had never heard of it. A delegation from the United Arab Emirates once came specifically to see the collection, which gives a sense of how far its reputation had traveled abroad.
