Ensemble ancienne prison/ancien hôpital de Haguenau

The Ensemble ancienne prison/ancien hôpital de Haguenau is a multi-building complex constructed from sandstone and brick, with structures rising three stories and covered by slate and tile roofs. The arrangement includes several connected wings that once functioned as distinct areas for different medical purposes.

Built between 1783 and 1788 under orders from the Intendant of Alsace, the facility was designed to serve both military personnel and the local civilian population. This construction reflects the administrative reforms and health priorities of the French-ruled region during that era.

The complex reflects how military and civilian medical services coexisted in one space, shaping the way the buildings are organized and used. Today visitors can see traces of this dual purpose in the layout and design choices throughout the site.

The site is located at 24 rue André-Traband and now houses the University Institute of Technology and Haguenau's municipal media library. Visitors should plan to explore the exterior and courtyards when these institutions are not in full operation, allowing for better access to the architectural features.

The facade displays architectural elements from the Louis XVI era, including triglyphs and garlands framing the central portal of the main entrance. These classical details are uncommon examples of refined design from this period in the Alsace region.
