Montou, Summit in Camélas, France
Montou is a summit in the Aspres region of the Eastern Pyrenees, rising to 289 meters above sea level. The mountain contains a network of cave passages with chambers and underground routes.
Archaeological excavations between 1985 and 1995 in the Montou cave revealed human settlements from the Neolithic period. These findings show that people inhabited the cave thousands of years ago.
The cave passages display inscriptions carved into the walls by visitors across many generations. These handwritten marks tell the story of people who have walked through this place over centuries.
The hike from the cemetery to the summit is steep and takes several hours to complete. Bring sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and a torch if you plan to explore the underground sections.
Beneath the mountain lies an underground maze with passages spanning about 2400 meters compressed into a remarkably small area. This hidden network is squeezed into a space no larger than a football field.
