Château du Vernay, 19th century château in Charette, France
The Château du Vernay features a monumental facade with clean lines and classical elements characteristic of late neoclassical architecture from the Second Empire period.
The château gained recognition when scientist Hilaire de Chardonnet established a workshop in its outbuildings to develop artificial silk before a tragic accident in 1888.
Between 1867 and 1872, the château hosted Charles de Bourbon, pretender to the Spanish crown, and members of European aristocracy for grand garden events.
The château commenced consolidation work in spring 2019 with plans to convert the structure into rental accommodations as part of a heritage preservation project.
The property maintained a tradition of holding elaborate banquets every January 14th, celebrating Saint Hilaire, patron saint of the Chardonnet family.
