Pont de la Palombe, Steel bridge in Bordeaux, France
Pont de la Palombe is a steel bridge south of Saint-Jean station that spans across railway tracks connecting two neighborhoods. The structure accommodates buses, cars, pedestrians, and cyclists on separate paths designed to handle the flow of traffic efficiently.
Construction began in 2018 as part of the Euratlantique development project, one of France's largest urban renewal initiatives. The project was completed in 2022 and improved connections between the station area and southern districts.
The bridge takes its name from the "Palombe Bleue" train that once served the region, honoring Bordeaux's railway heritage. This name reflects how central rail travel was to connecting the city with other parts of France.
The bridge is accessible to all types of traffic with safe and separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Visit outside peak hours near the station if you prefer less congestion when crossing the bridge.
Building it required special engineering because the entire 2,200-ton structure had to be installed over active railway lines without interrupting train service. Engineers found clever ways to construct it in sections that could be placed carefully into position.
