Forum de Vieux-la-Romaine

The Forum of Vieux-la-Romaine is a rectangular complex with shops, covered walkways, and a central square divided into sacred and public areas. The layout follows Roman planning principles, bringing administrative and economic functions together in one center.

The forum was founded in the early 2nd century and reached its peak between 120 and 140 AD with the construction of numerous public buildings. This growth reflects how important this settlement had become to the region.

The temple in the forum complex shows evidence of devotion to Mercury and Vulcan, gods important to local traders and craftspeople. These religious practices reveal what mattered to the people who gathered here daily.

Excavations continue regularly at the site, with guided tours available through preserved sections. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for uneven ground with active digging areas.

Excavations have uncovered specific architectural elements made with intonaco plaster, showing Roman construction methods in northern Gaul. This material reveals how builders adapted Roman techniques to local conditions.
