Ćokovac monastery, Gothic monastery in Tkon, Croatia.
Ćokovac is a Benedictine monastery on a hilltop near Tkon on Pašman Island, featuring medieval stone walls and a Gothic church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. The complex includes a courtyard, multiple buildings from different periods, and a small lapidarium with historical objects.
The monastery was founded in 1125 and relocated from Biograd to Pašman Island in 1129, where monks built a new Romanesque structure. This was later rebuilt in Gothic style, which remains visible in the buildings today.
The monastery displays stone fragments inscribed with Glagolitic script and houses a painted crucifix from the 15th century, reflecting artistic traditions of the region.
The monastery is open Monday through Saturday for visitors to explore the courtyard, Gothic church, and lapidarium. Wear comfortable shoes as the path to the church involves walking over rocky terrain.
This remains the only active male Benedictine monastery in Croatia, where a small community of monks gathers seven times daily for liturgical services. This continuous tradition of monastic life makes it a rare place in modern times.
