Živogošće, Coastal settlement in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia.
Živogošće is a coastal settlement in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia, made up of three neighboring sections: Porat, Mala Duba, and Blato. Each section has its own pebble beach and sits along the Makarska Riviera.
A Latin inscription carved into rock near a spring in Živogošće dates to 474 CE and points to settlement here during late Roman times. This makes the site one of the older known inhabited spots along this stretch of coastline.
The Franciscan monastery in Živogošće is one of the oldest along the Makarska Riviera and holds a collection of old books and paintings that visitors can see. It remains an active place of worship and continues to shape the religious life of the village today.
The three sections of the settlement are close to each other and easy to walk between, so you can explore all of them without much effort. Visiting outside the peak summer months makes the beaches far less crowded.
The name Živogošće comes from Slavic words meaning living springs, and the freshwater springs that emerge near the sea here gave the place its name. These springs are still active today and continue to supply the village with drinking water.
