Drvenik, Gradac

Drvenik is a coastal settlement along the Adriatic Sea south of Makarska, with pebbly beaches and views of Mount Biokovo in the background. The village spreads along the shore with traditional stone houses and an active harbor where boats and fishing define the waterfront.

The settlement's first written mention appears in records from the 13th century, with the Church of Saint George built in the following centuries. Medieval fortifications constructed during that period reflect the strategic importance of this location against attacks from the sea.

This settlement shows the character of a Dalmatian fishing community, where stone houses face the water and people work with boats and maritime trades. Visitors see how locals balance traditional maritime practices with the rhythms of seasonal tourism.

A ferry connects the settlement regularly to Sucuraj on Hvar Island, making day trips straightforward. A coastal path leads to the neighboring town of Zaostrog and invites walking and exploring on foot.

The old village center sits abandoned on a nearby hill, where traces of defensive walls still remain visible. This overlooked location reveals how residents gradually moved toward the shore and left their original settlement behind.
