Broadmeadow viaduct, Railway bridge in Malahide, Ireland
Broadmeadow Viaduct is a railway bridge north of Malahide station that spans across an estuary to carry trains on the Dublin to Belfast line. The structure crosses the water on multiple stone arches and piers that support the tracks above.
The original structure was built in 1843 as a timber viaduct for the Dublin and Drogheda Railway and later reinforced with stone. In 2009 the bridge partially collapsed, leading to the installation of steel piles and the construction of new concrete spans.
The viaduct represents a vital transportation link between Dublin and Belfast, supporting regional connectivity and economic development across eastern Ireland.
The viaduct can be viewed from outside to see the structure spanning the water below. Best views are available from nearby walking paths or roads alongside the bridge.
Following the 2009 collapse, engineers installed steel piles to strengthen all piers and constructed new precast concrete spans within three months.
